The cyclist's holy place is around Onomichi. It is my dream to start here and cycle Shimanami Kaido. Although I haven't stayed there myself, I have heard from others that you can safely stay here as you can keep your friend's bike in the room. There are restaurants and a GIANT store for bicycles, so you can be at ease in case of any emergencies. The exterior of the building is also stylish, so even those without interest in bicycles can enjoy it.
