On the first day of my trip to Fukuoka, I visited the famous Kawataro main branch known for squid! It's an old shop located between the pink streets of Nakasu. Inside the shop, there is a large aquarium where squids are swimming. You can taste fresh squid along with the local specialties, mentaiko and gomazaba. I ordered 100g of simmered squid for 1,700 yen, gomazaba for 1,200 yen, mentaiko for 700 yen, fried chicken, fried squid, salt-grilled squid, Hakata kame-ni for 600 yen, and squid shumai, among others. 🍣🍤🍶

September 2026I thought about it a lot before making a reservation and visiting. I booked for lunch because I heard it offers good value for money, and when I arrived on time, I was seated at the exact spot I wanted, surrounding the aquarium. It was wonderful to be able to watch the squid being caught and prepared right in front of me.
